What’s your experience of being treated bad for being white?

I was picking up cans in NYC. Saw a large bag by curb started taking some. Black guy comes out of store says those are my cans. I immediately start putting back. (Previously while picking found large bag containing cans plastic glasses straws as if from a party. Thought it was same kind of thing ) He says why are you doing this you're white. I say I need money too. Then he again says but you're white and threatens me if he sees me again. I got shook up and went to police station and asked cop if person found dead with possibly no ID do check fingerprints?
